How to Live Intentionally

Habits are one of the things in life that happen to everyone, whether old, young, green, orange, big or small. Everyone can cite at least one bad habit. However, most people cannot pinpoint the exact moment that habit started. This is the case because most habits are formed with any fore-thought. They just, kind of happen and then some ten, or twenty, years later you’re rying to figure out why you drink, smoke or bite your nails, or All Three! If you can relate, then it is time to start breaking bad habits and building new positive habits, by living intentionally.

So, what is living intentionally all about? It’s about doing things on purpose and in order to do so, you need to make some decisions before you act.

For example, you are hanging out with your friends, like you do every weekend, but this time someone offers.  you a drag from a hookah pipe. You don’t smoke and never have, but you are curious. This is one of those intentional moments that can lead to habits that are not conducive to what and where you want to end up in life. If you find yourself in this, or a similar situation, it is a good time to pause and ask yourself three questions:

  • How would [insert name of someone you respect] react if they saw me doing this?
  • How will I feel about myself if I did this every day?
  • What type of energy will this action set into motion, or what good could come from this action?

If you come up with three positive responses to these questions, then maybe hookah smoking is in alignment with your life’s goals. However, I cannot imagine how this could be true because I cannot picture any good thing that would come from formimg this habit.

If you want to learn more about living intentionally, I recommend this audio book, “Making Habits, Breaking Habits: Why We Do Things, What We Don’t and How to Make Any Change Stick“, by Jeremy Dean. It’s a good listen and it really speaks to this subject.
